Andy Whiteman, Resources and Waste Management Expert

Andy has 19 years experience in the environment and development sector, and has worked in over 35 countries worldwide. His core expertise is in policy, strategy and planning, and preparation and implementation of development programmes, with a particular focus on resources and waste management.
He is co-author of the World Bank's Strategic Planning Guide for Municipal Waste Management. Andy and is an experienced facilitator of local development processes. He has worked with many international organizations to provide development assistance, including the EC, World Bank, IFC, ADB, GTZ, DFID and Danida, and has also worked for the oil and gas sector. He regularly helps clients to find project partners, and experienced professionals to work on them. He helps companies to prepare technical and financial proposals, NGOs to target their resources, and public authorities to prepare financing applications for infrastructure projects.

Mihail Staynov, Waste Management Expert

Mihail Staynov worked for ten years, starting with 1987, in the Ministry of Environment and Waters. For the first 5 years of his engagement at the Ministry he worked as an expert on waste management and urban environment and for further 5 years as head of department on waste management, mineral resources and use, and urban environment. During that period he was instrumental in developing environmental legislation and infrastructure modenization programming documents in close cooperation with respective agencies from the EC, USA, UK, Japan, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, as well as the World Bank, and the Secretariat and Task Force of the Basel Convention.

Mihail Staynov is one of the most experienced and recognised Bulgarian experts in the field of waste management, with a wide understanding and knowledge of the Bulgarian legislation and EU Directives in the field and practical issues affecting implementation at the municipal level. He is one of the foremost experts in regionalisation of waste management service delivery, pre-and-feasibility study of infrastructure projects, implementation and procurement. Mihail Staynov was also involved in the development of guidelines for development of municipal waste management programmes, training programmes, trainings for Bulgarian, Romanian, Serbian and Macedonian waste management experts from authorities and business.

Sonya Yankova, Finance and Economy Expert

Sonya Yankova is an experienced economic and financial expert on municipal waste management and wastewater treatment. She has conducted numerous financial analyses, cost-benefit analyses, sensitivity and risk analyses of solid waste management measures and wastewater treatment companies. She has expertise and the experience in the update of the municipal environmental programmes and development of costs distribution plans. Sonya Yankova’s all-round economic experience is complemented by sound knowledge on financial assessment/tariff studies, budgetary planning and accounting, optimisation studies, economic analysis of options, and tender documentation and procedures.

Kancho Kostadinov, Institutional Development and Capacity-building Expert

Kancho Kostadinov has more than 19 years experience in working with local administrations and governmental institutions on environmental field. Much of this experience comes from institutional strengthening aspect. He has been a trainer and trainee in more than 60 seminars on environmental issues, acting as a facilitator in many of them.
He has an extensive experience in development of municipal waste management and environmental programmes. Kancho Kostadinov is also an Environmental Impact Assessment expert.

Réka Soós, M.Sc., Climate change and waste management expert

Reka Soos has 8 years experience in developing and implementing environmental projects in Romania and Hungary, having worked especially in the fields of climate change and waste management. She is a methodology expert on the United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change Joint Implementation (UNFCCC JI) Accreditation Team (AT) since 2006 and an expert for climate change for project evaluation under the EU INTERREG IVC program. She holds a master degree of Wageningen University, the Netherlands in Environmental Sciences, with a specialization in environmental economics and environmental system analyses. Her Bachelor degree is a double major in Applied Economics and Business Administration from the American University in Bulgaria.

Ciprian Popovici, Resources management expert

Ciprian has 5 years of experience in environmental consulting. He has worked both in Romania and abroad. His expertise is on specific environmental sociology issues, focusing on multi-stakeholder processes, strengthening institutional and organizational capacities for environmental improvements, facilitating communication and dialogue, environmental education and socio-ecological networks. Ciprian has experience on sustainable development policy making and in monitoring systems and evaluation of policies, programmes and projects from the point of view of sustainability. Ciprian has also worked in waste management as a researcher and consultant, focusing on informal sector activities in this sector, legal and institutional aspects regarding landfilling in Romania, landfill closure, environmental permitting and compliance. Stephen Bates

Having started his career in the advertising industry, Stephen moved into marketing management during the mid 90s and was appointed as Head of Marketing for a leading childcare charity where he first become exposed to the discipline of Social Marketing, an area in which he excelled, developing several social marketing outreach programmes, many of which remain in use to this day.

Combining advertising, marketing and social outreach skills, Stephen co-founded EnviroComms in 2004 and is today, widely regarded as one of Europe’s leading experts in the field of behavioural change within the waste management sector and is the strategic architect behind some of the most successful recycling communication campaigns in recent years.

His positive influence on local and national recycling services have become recognised on a global scale and over the past few years, has seen him lead on communication and public outreach work in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and south east Asia where his company; EnviroComms are supporting some highly innovative energy to waste projects.

Anna Szabó M.Sc., Environmmental Consultant in Biodiversity issues

Anna has 9 years experience in nature conservation surveys, environmental impact assessment and biological survey for historical building. She gained most of her experience in plant survey, management and monitoring plan elaboration for protected areas and research in plant ecology. She worked in various habitats as a botanist, surveying deciduous forests, steppe-like grasslands, floodplain areas and subalpine pastures as well. As member of environmental impact assessment teams, her main objective is to find nature-friendly solutions for development projects. Anna has seven years teaching experience, being associate lecturer at Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca. She holds a master degree in Biocenology and Management of Protected Areas.

Nikola Doychinov

Mr. Doychinov worked for five years starting with 1997 in the Ministry of Environment and Water achieving the position of state expert in waste management. During that period he was largely involved in the development of national waste management policy and the establishment of cornerstones for harmonization of the Bulgarian legislation with relevant EU regulations, directives and decisions in the sector. He is one of the most experienced Bulgarian experts in the field of waste management. Over the last years he took part in more than 20 projects for the development of waste treatment and disposal infrastructure in Bulgaria and South Eastern Europe with a total investment value for the clients of above 300 million Euro. Mr. Doychinov was also involved in the establishment of producer responsibility schemes and management of specific waste streams such as packaging waste, waste oils and spent batteries. He supported the creation and the strengthening of the largest packaging waste recovery scheme in Bulgaria.

Anthony Tonchevski

Anthony Tonchevski has 22 year professional experience in the environmental studies as lecturer, researcher and consultant. Beginning his career as a chemist and an assistant-professor at University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy he is recently providing consultancy services to different companies, municipalities and state authorities in Bulgaria related to environmental protection, including Cleaner Technology, Environmental Impact and Needs Assessment, Environmental Policy and Legislation. His experience in the field of Waste Management comprises generation scenarios (forecasting, planning), investment plans, analyses of waste morphological and chemical composition.
